Depth needs stillness. A mind churning through an argument works at the surface; a settled one reaches further down — “calm minds think deep too.” That is the real reason Innocent guards his calm: it isn’t only comfort, it’s the condition for thinking well.

Altercations, as he describes them, throw off negative energy that rattles “the seas of our minds and sends huge waves to the shore.” Anyone who picks fights with him regularly will find his company withdrawn — not out of grudge, but out of love for peace of mind.

What he wants instead is plain. No time spent arguing for no reason, or trying to look smart, or fighting for an edge; his talents have productive uses. So when a fire starts inside his space he puts it out, and gets back to working on his life.
