Love held as a free choice leaves nobody to bill. If you loved because you wanted to, the outcome — good or bad — is not someone else’s to be blamed or credited for. Especially when it hurts: Innocent accepts the situation as it is.

He writes from inside that. He loved someone more than he thought he could and she never knew, unable to read his sacrifices as sacrifices; what was a free decision to him looked to her like him “just being unorthodox”.

Love of that kind, unnoticed because it was never staged to be noticed, is where he thinks the largest sacrifices and goodwill sit — given by people who care nothing for reward or consequence. “Uncredited love is misunderstood now, but is realized some time in the future, during reflection, and perhaps appreciated then.”
