Self-knowledge is the learning Innocent ranks above the rest, and his reason is practical rather than lofty: a great deal can be avoided in life simply by knowing something. Dreams that die on you are one of those things.

He came to that by losing. A career he had worked toward was taken by life’s complications rather than by any failure of his own, and the path he had found was swept from under his feet. What the loss uncovered were the passions underneath it — the ones that had sent him down that path to begin with — now more clearly defined in his mind. “I am a curious being, and that part of me will never die.”

Curiosity had been teaching him all along: “A curious venture can turn out to be a lesson of a lifetime.” Those ventures gathered into the one vision he follows now, and it fulfils every one of those passions — better, he says, than anything he had imagined before.
